Amidst the bustling crowd of pet owners eagerly waiting outside the Chicanos por la Causa Carl Hayden Community Center, the dedicated volunteers and staff of the Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL), in partnership with PetSmart Charities, hosted their first community clinic event.

“People lined up hours before the clinic even started. Their cats bundled in blankets, their dogs in cozy in their kennels or snuggled up inside their jackets,” says Sarah Ocampo, Community Grants Manager for PetSmart Charities. “People are so excited to be here; our partners and volunteers are here to make this happen. We have families receiving vaccines for their pets for the first time.”

The event aimed to provide much-needed vaccinations for pets belonging to families facing barriers to accessible and affordable veterinary care. One of the many heartwarming moments of the day was witnessing the joy and relief on pet owners’ faces as they received essential vaccines for their beloved companions, free of charge. For many, this event meant not having to choose between their pet’s health and putting food on the table.

“This is such a high-need, underserved community,” explains Alessandra Navidad, President and CEO of the Arizona Animal Welfare League. “It’s a veterinary desert with little to no access to veterinary services. This event is part of our ongoing mission to enhance the health and wellness of these pets and ensure we’re a reliable resource for the pet owners,” she adds.

Among the attendees were Carina and her beloved companion, Bebe. Carina is known as the kind-hearted pet lover in her neighborhood, and Bebe is one of countless pets who were left abandoned at her doorstep. With limited resources, she was concerned about the cost of vaccinations and healthcare for her pets. The vaccination clinic created a reliable resource that ensured her pet’s health and well-being without worrying about financial strain.

The event’s impact reverberated throughout the community, sparking conversations about the transformative power of accessible veterinary care and the potential of collective action in addressing societal challenges. It was a powerful reminder that no family should be deprived of essential healthcare for their pets due to financial constraints.

As the day drew to a close and the last pet received its vaccination, the volunteers and staff members of AAWL felt a sense of accomplishment. Their dedication made a tangible difference in the lives of over 300 pets, reaffirming their commitment to their mission of saving and improving the lives of animals and their families.

The event was also a testament to the AAWL’s commitment to the well-being of animals and its dedication to serving the local community. As we approach the inaugural PetSmart Charities Pet Hunger Awareness Day™ on September 26th, we’re shedding light on the concerning issue of pet hunger all month long. An estimated 30 million pets across the United States face hunger daily. Together, we can change lives—For Pets. For People. For Good.

30 Million Pets Need Your Help

Pet hunger is a hidden problem that often goes unnoticed by society. As we care for our furry companions and welcome them into our homes, it is disheartening to learn that millions of pets lack the basic sustenance required to live healthy and fulfilling lives. This can lead to pet parents having to make heartbreaking decisions to forego nutrition for themselves, or other necessities, in order to feed their pets. Despite the national attention to food insecurity, pet food insecurity is another crisis that looms beneath the surface.

We’re Taking Action—for Good

PetSmart Charities has been at the forefront of bringing attention to the issue of pet hunger. Our dedication to providing food and resources to pets in need has touched the lives of countless animals and their loving families, but we can’t end pet hunger alone.

Recognizing that pets are part of the family, we’ve joined forces with Feeding America®, a nationwide network of food banks dedicated to eradicating hunger among humans. PetSmart Charities provides nutritious pet food, lovingly prepared by our partner Alphia, to be distributed by Feeding America partner organizations alongside human meals. Unique partnerships like these leverage resources to create a more comprehensive and impactful solution to ensure both families and their pets receive the nutrition they require.

Additionally, PetSmart Charities has teamed up with Meals on Wheels America, an organization renowned for its mission to support homebound seniors, many of whom depend on their beloved pets for comfort and companionship. By collaborating with Meals on Wheels America, PetSmart Charities helps support new and existing pet assistance services, including pet food deliveries, access to veterinary care, and other critical services, for pet-owning older adults.

When Zora, a beloved family pet, became ill, her owner tried everything to get her help, but he couldn't access veterinary care no matter how hard he tried. He couldn’t afford a veterinary appointment, and the local low-cost clinic wouldn't see her because she didn't fit their criteria of medical needs. In addition to facing the possible loss of his best friend, Zora’s owner also faced personal health issues that landed him in the hospital, and he had to rely on a friend to help Zora find medical care.

Fortunately, his friend discovered a clinic held by PetSmart Charities® grant recipient, Ruthless Kindness, who stepped in to help Zora receive the lifesaving care she needed.

A Journey Toward Healthcare for All

The barriers Zora and her family faced are far too common. More than 70 percent of homes in the United States now include pets, but 50 million pets in the U.S. don't have access to even basic veterinary care including preventative care, health exams and vaccinations. To combat this, PetSmart Charities is proud to announce a commitment of $100 million in the next five years to help break down the geographic, cultural, language and financial barriers that prevent pets from receiving the adequate veterinary care they need to thrive at home with their families.

“This grant provides the crucial missing link. We have veterinary professionals who want to save lives, people who want to save their own animals, and animals who don't want to suffer, but none of us have enough resources to get medicine to all who can't afford a traditional vet hospital,” says Sarah Reidenbach, DVM, CEO at Ruthless Kindness.

The Billion-Dollar Issue

PetSmart Charities estimates it would cost more than $20 billion annually to bridge the gap for pets in need of veterinary care. With this commitment, we’re leading the change for good—but we can’t do it alone.

When pets don’t receive the healthcare they need, they suffer, and their parents do, too. Pets are members of the family and deserve pathways to healthcare that treats them as such.

“By helping these animals, we ease the stress and strain on their human family members in the process. It's a huge sigh of relief to have a national organization like PetSmart Charities listening to and caring about often forgotten animals and people and stepping up to be a part of the solution,” explains Reidenbach.

We’re in it Together

Today, Zora is back to being a healthy and happy pug, enjoying life with the people who love her. But, there are millions more just like her who need our help.

“The challenges facing the veterinary care system are vast and varied and no single organization can solve them alone,” says Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “Through PetSmart Charities’ commitment, we will be able to partner with and empower existing programs, universities and community organizations while also funding forward-looking solutions such as low-cost vet clinics and veterinary student scholarships. In 2021, more than 53 million people turned to food banks, food pantries, and meal programs for much-needed assistance. When people face food insecurity, their pets do too. In many instances, pet parents battling food insecurity face the possibility of rehoming or relinquishing their pets to animal shelters because they cannot afford to feed them.

To help address this crisis, we’ve committed nearly 18 million to combat pet food insecurity, beginning in 2021, through an ongoing partnership with Feeding America. Pet food donations from PetSmart Charities® helped Feeding America affiliated food banks provide pet food alongside human food to families in need across the country. Thanks to dog and cat food donations from PetSmart Charities, Affiliates like Food Bank of the Rockies were able to impact the quality of life for pets affected by food insecurity.

Economic changes across the country have resulted in an increased need for food in communities beyond those identified as food deserts. Households across the country face a 10 percent increase in the cost of groceries and rising prices for gas and housing.

With one in six people in America experiencing food insecurity, this crisis can happen to anyone regardless of background or socioeconomic status. When millions are at risk of facing a critical situation, family pets are at risk of suffering too. Join us in combating pet food insecurity and help keep pets and people healthy, happy, and together.

Due to increasing economic challenges, communities across the country struggle to gain access to veterinary care, including basic resources such as vaccinations and prescriptions, spay/neuter surgeries, dental services, and preventive health care for their companion animals. Given the level of inflation, the skyrocketing costs of vet care impact everyone regardless of background or socioeconomic status.

To create change within the veterinary care community and create models of accessibility for all, we partner with local changemakers to address the immediate problem while creating long-term, sustainable solutions. With your support, we’re creating impactful partnerships that help keep pets healthy, happy, and together with those who love them.

Partnerships with organizations like the Dumb Friends League who bring affordable and convenient veterinary care to all in need throughout their community. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, PetSmart Charities recently awarded a $175,000 grant to support the Dumb Friends League in their ongoing commitment to accessible and exceptional urgent veterinary care for people and pets across Colorado. Their new Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur, which opened in January 2022, offers donor-subsidized community veterinary services and diverse learning opportunities to inspire the next generation of veterinarians and animal welfare professionals. PetSmart Charities’ grant will support the hospital’s team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and customer service representatives.

This unique opportunity to partner with Colorado State University (CSU) on the university’s new “Spur” campus in Denver will allow the Dumb Friends League to serve more communities than ever before. The League’s inclusive environment at CSU Spur’s Vida building will decrease access barriers for those most in need, thereby benefiting pets, families, and their surrounding communities.

“We are so grateful for the support of PetSmart Charities in helping us significantly expand access to veterinary care for people and pets in need,” said Dr. Apryl Steele, President and CEO of the Dumb Friends League. “With this generous grant, our team at CSU Spur will keep more animals healthy, happy, and in homes with the people who love them.”

Joshua & Dudog Find a Second Chance

Joshua didn't have plans for a puppy. But, when Dudog, a young mixed-breed pup, made his way to Joshua's home, he also made his way into Joshua's heart.

"A roommate of mine told me about a dog left in an abandoned home and asked if I wanted it. I said yes, and now he's part of my family," explains Joshua.

Soon after deciding to become his forever parent, Dudog became very ill. A trip to the nearest veterinarian confirmed that Dudog was Parvo positive.

"He was throwing up and woke me up from my sleep one morning; he had diarrhea, lack of energy, real lethargic, not puppy-like."

The diagnosis broke Joshua's heart on many levels. Not only was he experiencing his beloved pet endure pain, but the costs for the unexpected veterinary care were more than Joshua could handle.

In his frantic search for help, he was referred to a PetSmart Charities® partner and grant recipient—First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP). Thanks to our investment, the Feltons received complete Parvo care for Dudog. They also equipped him with the necessary resources to give Dudog the best chance at a full recovery. Even though Covid restrictions were still in effect, causing the clinic to have limited space for Parvo clients, the team at FCNMHP found a way to help. They created a makeshift exam room from Joshua's vehicle, ensuring the pup was comfortable and able to be treated.

"This grant gives dog parents like us an opportunity to take care of our pet, to keep them healthy. It means a lot. We just couldn't do it without this grant and what PetSmart Charities is doing for pets and families."

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we've committed $15 million this year to support programs that bring affordable and convenient veterinary care to communities across the country. Together with our community partners, we're also developing community-based leaders to transform how, where and by whom veterinary care is delivered. Over time, new ecosystems will emerge that provide an updated veterinary care system that is more accessible for diverse populations.

Your support gave Dudog a second chance at a better life. Having made a full recovery, Dudog and Joshua can move forward with their journey together and enjoy many happy memories for years to come.

Sitting snug between Alyssa’s feet, Maya patiently awaits the unknown. The Pitbull-mix puppy, donning a spring-colored collar adorned with a light pink flower, doesn't know she's in line for her first veterinary visit. At only five months old, with a demeanor as breezy as her style, it's clear that Maya finds solace beside Alyssa under any circumstance. And, for Alyssa, a first-time dog mom, the feeling is mutual.

Alyssa and Maya are new patients at Emancipet, a Houston non-profit veterinary clinic. They’re visiting the clinic for routine puppy care, including vaccinations and a standard wellness checkup—essential services that aren't within reach for nearly 50 million family pets due to the accessible or affordable veterinary resources across the country.

As a recent college graduate living on her own for the first time, Alyssa knew having a pup in her life would lend the companionship she craved and also improve her mental health.

"I suffer through depression and anxiety, so it's helpful to have that stable joy to come home to and to have that confidence that someone loves you," says Alyssa.

When she began looking for veterinary services in her community, she noticed a lack of affordable and convenient options. Fortunately, Alyssa came across PetSmart Charities’® longtime, trusted, partner Emancipet. She found that their services fit her budget and made her feel comfortable knowing she had a trusted partner in keeping Maya healthy.

Emancipet is a respected nonprofit provider of low-cost veterinary clinics. They provide preventative and standard of care services pet parents like Alyssa need to ensure long and healthy lives for their beloved pets. With support from PetSmart Charities, together, we deliver on our promise to make the world a better place for pets, and the people who love them.

She gives me a reason to wake up in the morning, I know it sounds selfish, but it's important to keep her happy and healthy so I can be happy and healthy.

For Alyssa, Maya is more than a loyal companion; she's her support system. "One of the main reasons I got Maya was for security and mental health. But I also suffer from seizures. I'm having her trained as a service animal,” adds Alyssa.

With nearly five million pets in need of loving homes, removing barriers to veterinary care can save pets' lives while also helping to create bonds that improve the well-being of the people who love them. It’s a staggering number – 50 million beloved pets across the country don’t receive veterinary care.

At PetSmart Charities® we believe all pets deserve to live long, happy lives in the arms of those who love them. Sadly, the lack of accessible and affordable veterinary care risks the bond between pets and their families. According to a report from the Access to Veterinary Care Coalition, one in four pet owners experience barriers to obtaining veterinary care. The primary obstacle for pet owners seeking care is finances. But financial barriers are only one obstacle; transport, language, and location also pose a challenge for pet owners seeking veterinary assistance for their pets.

We see that it is a complex problem, but our commitment is simple – to help keep pets with the people who love them, regardless of their situation. That’s why we are providing grants to partner organizations to help address the immediate problem while creating long-term, sustainable solutions that will help keep pets with their families. Organizations like Emancipet, who are helping to expand access to veterinary care for pet parents and communities who need it most.

"More American households now include more pets than young children, and pets are almost universally considered part of the family," said Emancipet CEO Amy Mills. "Every family member deserves quality health care, and we are honored to have this opportunity to expand our reach and provide quality, affordable care to more families," she added.

Pet parents want to do what is right and best for their pet and take care of their needs, but unfortunately, various hardships can sometimes interfere with a family’s ability to provide for their pet. These types of partnerships will help ensure pet parents can provide their pets with the critical and preventative care needed to live long, healthy and happy lives, regardless of their financial circumstance.

A better world for all

More than 70 percent of homes in the U.S. now include a pet to love. Giving a pet a good life enriches our own.

"When pet parents — especially seniors — can no longer afford to care for their pets, they often have no choice but to give up their beloved family members. Investing in this critical partnership with Emancipet leverages their expertise and delivers affordable care that will help keep pet families together in the community they serve. The benefits of caring for pets shouldn't belong exclusively to the privileged," explains Aimee Gilbreath, PetSmart Charities President.

Under current models, it would cost an estimated $23 billion annually to provide affordable care to pets not receiving any care. No one organization can solve this complex problem alone.

The veterinary care system needs an overhaul.

That's why, thanks to the generosity of our donors, we've committed $15 million this year alone to support programs that bring affordable and convenient veterinary care to communities across the country. Through our support, we're also developing community-based leaders to transform how, where and by whom veterinary care is delivered. Over time, new ecosystems will emerge that provide an updated veterinary care system – one that is more accessible for diverse populations.
